The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan

Book: The Red Pyramid (Kane Chronicles #1)
Author: Rick Riordan
# of Pages: 549 (Paperback)
Rating: 4 stars

Goodreads Summary
Since their mother's death, Carter and Sadie have become near strangers. While Sadie has lived with her grandparents in London, her brother has traveled the world with their father, the brilliant Egyptologist, Dr. Julius Kane.

One night, Dr. Kane brings the siblings together for a "research experiment" at the British Museum, where he hopes to set things right for his family. Instead, he unleashes the Egyptian god Set, who banishes him to oblivion and forces the children to flee for their lives.

Soon, Sadie and Carter discover that the gods of Egypt are waking, and the worst of them —Set— has his sights on the Kanes. To stop him, the siblings embark on a dangerous journey across the globe - a quest that brings them ever closer to the truth about their family and their links to a secret order that has existed since the time of the pharaohs.(

My Thoughts:
This book is narrated by brother and sister Carter and Sadie Kane. Carter was amusing while I found Sadie to be obnoxious for the first half of the book. When their father disappears, Carter and Sadie set off on a great adventure to find him. At the same time, the Egyptian god, Set, is determined to gain full power.

I was very intrigued by the Egyptian history and mythology. My only complaint is the length of the book. It took me a while to finish it.

Before I Wake by Rachel Vincent

Book: Before I Wake (Soul Screamers #6)
Author: Rachel Vincent
# of Pages: 281 (ebook)
Challenge: 2012 Ebook Challenge
Rating: 5 stars

Goodreads Summary
I died on a Thursday-killed by a monster intent on stealing my soul. The good news? He didn't get it. The bad news? Turns out not even death will get you out of high school...  Covering up her own murder was one thing, but faking life is much harder than Kaylee Cavanaugh expected. After weeks spent "recovering," she's back in school, fighting to stay visible to the human world, struggling to fit in with her friends and planning time alone with her new reaper boyfriend. But to earn her keep in the human world, Kaylee must reclaim stolen souls, and when her first assignment brings her face-to-face with an old foe, she knows the game has changed. Her immortal status won't keep her safe. And this time Kaylee isn't just gambling with her own life....

My Thoughts:
Kaylee not only has to acclimate to her new job as a soul reclaimer, but she also has to pretend to still be alive, and it is not as easy as she thought it was going to be. It is a good thing she has her friends to help her.

I thought Before I Wake was slightly creepier than the previous books in the series. And, as always, I just loved Tod. There was one scene toward the end of the book that was a bit confusing. And I'm very curious about Luca.

Overall, Before I Wake was a great book, but I think If I Die is still my favorite.
